Commercial Pilot Certificate

You want to get paid to fly!

Attaining Commercial Pilot certification is the key to earning compensation as a pilot. This certification unlocks a range of personally and financially rewarding flying possibilities. Commercial pilots can engage in flying passengers for hire, transporting cargo, or pursuing careers as flight instructors, charter pilots, airline pilots, and more. The opportunities are vast, and the sky becomes the limit for those holding a Commercial Pilot certificate!

What Are The Prerequisites?

  • Candidates pursuing a Commercial Pilot certification must meet certain criteria. They should be at least 18 years old, proficient in reading, speaking, writing, and understanding English, and hold a private pilot certificate.

  • Under CFR Part 61, a minimum of 250 flight hours is required for a commercial pilot, including 100 hours of pilot-in-command time and 50 hours of cross-country flight. Cross-country training involves completing a trip with one leg covering at least 300 nautical miles, and a single leg of at least 250 miles. Additionally, candidates need at least 10 hours of instrument training and 10 hours in a complex aircraft to ensure they are proficient and experienced pilots.

  • While having an Instrument rating is not mandatory for a Commercial Pilot, it is highly recommended. An Instrument rating facilitates a smooth transition from Private to Commercial. Without it, a commercial pilot is restricted from flying for hire at night or venturing more than 50 nautical miles from their home base airport. Most pilots prefer to obtain an instrument rating on their way to achieving Commercial status to avoid these limitations.

  • Since candidates must already have a Private Pilot certificate, it's likely they possess at least a 3rd class aviation medical certificate. While Commercial Pilots can still fly with a 3rd class medical, they need at least a current 2nd class medical to fully utilize Commercial Pilot privileges. It is advisable to obtain a 1st class medical before starting commercial training to ensure qualification and avoid wasting time and money on a certificate they can't use.

  • During commercial flight training, students learn new maneuvers and refine existing ones.
